Queen of the Changlings PIP 0.5 by frozenpyro71 Queen of the Changlings PIP 0.5 by frozenpyro71
Wow has it really been 3 weeks since I last posted a pic of Chrysalis, im getting sloppy :P

She has been a pain in the flank from start to finish but i'm enjoying every second of this sculpt.

At the time of posting she has about 80% of her body painted. Still lots of work to do, i've restarted the flame ring to bring it back up to speed and the wings i've hardly started. Will be a little while longer untill I can post the final pics but stay tuned as i'm going to be posting more pics as and when I can.

The dark photo is intentional, it shows of the OSL a bt better. (especially under the chin)

As always, comments, crits and questions welcome.

someone knows sculpture, nice job recessing the pupils to give it that eye-popping depth.

The eyes are not actually recessed. They are painted with a high pigment black ink.

That might explain it. Are they glossy as well, while the rest of her is more of a matte? Either way, it's awesome and wonderfully executed.

Yes the inks dry glossy and everything else is given a coat of matte varnish.

Fabulous! Your painting is great, especially on that pupil!
Just two things looks a bit strange to me: the eye with those two white micro-smudges on the left (nothing really noticeable) and the mouth (she's grinning, isn't she?). Did you use the old Citadel "Black ink" near the eyelids?
Anyway, you've done a great job with the lights! I'll look forward to see it completed with trepidation!

You are right about the whites of the eyes being a bit smudged, i need to go back and reblend those bits.
The mouth does not show well in this pic as most of it is obscured in shadow. I may have realised that photographing this sculpt will be an absolute nightmare.
It is indeed the old citedel black ink, i've still got half a pot of it in my collection. Best stuff GW ever produced and they stopped it, damn shame.

This is really great. I love how you simulate lighting in your paint jobs, which add a lot to the realism.

one question, how do you do the shading? cause it's awesome

Pretty much all of the shading and highlighting is done with my airbrush except for the eyes which were painted with normal brushes. Lots of thin layers of paint to build up the colour transitions.

Did you ever consider putting some gloss finish on the eyes to give them an actual shine?

Never been a great fan of glossy eyes. I'd much prefer to paint it to look glossy (i know how mad that sounds). The only thing i will be leaving glossy are the pupils only to make the colour more intense and not neccessaraly for the shine.

Wow, the painting has been done very well, especially her horn and mane. I think the eyes could have been done a little better though, they look a little scruffy but that could just be the lighting

Ah, well....I think that it could be a little bit for smoothly painted around the edges of the eyes and a bit more curved at the corners. There is also a spec of white under the green of the eye that bothers me a little but I'm pretty sure that its just the shine from the light. But apart from that, its a beautifully painted piece. ^^

Agreed, the edges of the eyes do need blending better, thats the next on the 'to paint' list. The white dot on the lower lid is a reflection on the glossy inks i used to define the edge. it will disapear when I mat varnish the whole thing.

from what i can see the eye itself looks perfect, but the lower eyelid looks as though it is missing some material so it doesn't look like one fluid line.

But then again its only visible coz its such a close up shot, when its in a display case (I hope that's where its going lol) you wont be able to notice it im betting

Ahh yes I see where you mean. This is just a light reflection of the inks I used to define the edge of the lower lid. The ikns dry glossy so this is why it looks rough, the sculpt itself is ok as far as I can tell.

Thats the problem with photo's :) have you painted it with a airbrush btw?

Most of this was painted with an airbrush. The basecoats, shading/higlighting and the source lighting were all airbrushed. The eyes and other fine details were done with normal brushes.

thought so, love how you used the overspray on her hair to give her cheek that glow (assuming thats how you did it). Do you mind me asking how much your airbrush cost? As i will soon be getting a airbrush and compressor kit for around 100 new
