Octavia PIP Fur

Description

Third piece of PIP series hopefully demonstrating how i painted my Octavia sculpt.

The two brands of paint I use pretty much exclusivly are Vallejo (V) and Citadel (C). Unfortunatly Citadel have just reworked their entire line so none of the names i use here will corrispond to the current paints. I will do my best to describe the colours.

Priming and undercoating.
After giving the sculpt a good wash with soapy water to remove and dirt, dust and grease she was sprayed with grey car body primer. Once this was dry she was sprayed with black spraypaint. This may seem odd, why wouldn't I leave a predominatly grey figure in a grey undercoat?
I did this for several reasons. Painting over a grey basecoat tends to leave all the colours looking wshed out. Secondly its easier to match the colours to my paints from a black undercoat. Finally the shadows and highlights are much easier to get, and look much better.

The basecoat for the fur was painted with (c) Codex grey (mid cold grey). To get some depth to the figure, the basecoat was washed with first a dark grey and then a near black. This was applied to areas that would naturally have little natural light, like under the chin and under the legs. Any areas that didn't look quite right were repainted with the codex grey.

The first set of highlights was done with a 1/1 mix of (c) Codex grey and (c) Fortress Grey (lighter cold grey). For most of the highlighting and shading on this piece i kept my paints diluted really heavilly. This allowed me to do multiple layers for each highlight stage minimising the damage if i messed up or over highlighted.

The highlights were concentrated on areas that would naturally catch the light such as the top of the legs and the arms, pretty much any area that can be seen from the top down.

Next set of highlights were pure Fortress grey, 1/3 fortress grey/white, 1/1 fortress grey/ white.

At this stage i noticed that the grey was looking very cold and lifeless. With a coulps of glazes of (c) Charadon Granite (dark grey-brown) it looked more respectable. The brown in the paint gives a slight colour varience to the grey making it look much 'warmer'. I also glazed the shaded areas with (c) Liche Purple (dark purple). I chose this colour as i knew i would use it on the cutiemark and wanted to tie it into the model.

All the deep ahadows were given a wash of black ink to enrichand darken the shadows.

The fur was then rehighlighted with the grey/white mix and given a final highlight with pure white concentrating on the very top surfaces.

Forgot to mention, every now and again I would give the model a light coating of matt varnish to stop my fingers rubbing off any of the paint as i handeld it.

I think thats everything. If I missed anything, or you would like to know more let me know
