Changling Queen Chrysalis - WIP final sculpt by frozenpyro71 Changling Queen Chrysalis - WIP final sculpt by frozenpyro71
After a mad few weeks, I have finally managed to finish my Chrysalis sculpt. The wings are still very much a WIP so no pics just yet.

Also the base is not anywher near finished, the fire needs more painting and the plinth needs to be built

This has deffinatly been my most challenging sculpt to date but it was tones of fun to do. Lets just hope I can get the painting looking as good as i hope to.

As always comments, critisism and thoughts are most welcome.

Truly awesome sir! You deserve a Llama for this! It's just sumthin' I do for sculptors who've successfully tackled the task that is sculpting Chrysalis.. I know from experience, I'm now on my second Chrys sculpture, so I know how insanely hard she is to sculpt! Bravo!

If I have one of these, I'll love to put it right beside my Starcraft 2 Infested Kerrigan sculpture.

How'd you get her mane to be wavy like that without it sagging in the oven?? :noes:

Simple, I didn't use an oven. The material is called milliput, its an self curing two part epoxy putty. It sets solid after a few hours without the need for baking. The individual pieces were supported with wire while it cured.

What about the wings?

The wings are being cast out of clear resin, they will kinda look like an insect/faery wing when i'm done (dragonfly maybe). See [link] for design and shape.

Ohkay, this is pretty cool.
I like the holes in her legs, tails and mane and the energetic pose, but the flames in particular.

I can't wait to see how you do those delicate wings. Some sort of cellophane-like material?

I'm going to try and cast the wings out of clear resin. With a bit of matt varnish to 'frost' them up in places and some ink washes the wings (hopefully) will look similar to a dragonfly or faery.

Hmm, have you thought about trying for a greenish iridescence, similar to a mother-of-pearl sheen?

I've seen that done on some ceramics. In glasswork it's called an overglaze. Apparently there are pearlescent clay foils one can apply to polymer clays before baking, but I don't know if they come in the correct greenish shades for the wings.

This is what I mean as far as the color: [link]

I've also imagined the green parts of Chrysalis' carapace as being akin to the elytra of this common summer beetle we have in our area: [link]

SCIENCE!! :D

I was going to try a irredecent effect on the carapace but without using irridescent mediums.
I was going to paint it.
This may not end up looking like proper irridescence but I like the challenge. Hopefully I can do it like the armour of my royal guard but using greens/blues/teals.

Although, I may try some areas of actual irridescent medium, in moderation, to see what the effect is like and highlight certain areas.

But...
How in the world you will paint her eyes with the mane covering her face!? D:

Its not quite as bad as it looks, the right side is completly clear and the left has just enough space to get my brushes in. If push comes to shove i can always remove the single bit of mane, paint the eye and reattach.
