With the gold, is it one flat metalic color and the glare is the lighting or did you do some shading and highlighting to bring out the differance

The effect is entirely painted. It's a technique called non-metallic metals, where flat paint is used to create the illusion of a shiny surface.

I've used something similar when painting minis. I thought it was, but wasn't sure. Did you use similar shading techniques on other portions of the sculpt, like the wings as well?

Yep. Started with a grey and worked up to a white and then washed the recesses to bring out the details.

Soon, proberbly not. That project is still in the very early stages of sculpting. Also it all depends on if the Traveling Pony Museum likes it and is willing to procure it.

Im actually curious as to how you got that 'metal' look with the paint. it looks really good.

Its a technique i picked up when I was painting warhammer minis called Non-Metalic Metals (NMM). Basicly it uses paints that do not use metalic mediums to create a 'realistic' matalic look. Kind of what a canvas painter would do but on a 3D surface. For example; using greys to paint a silver/steel look, or browns and ochres to paint gold. In theroy behind it is relativly simple, paint lighter colours on areas that would catch the light or reflect it to a greater degreee.

It is not as easy in practice. It took me longer and more attempts than I care to admit just to get my head around it, I am still in no way as profficent as i'd like. Most of the 'reflections' on the Guard are pure guesswork and what i thought looked good.

From what I have picked up while doing NMM is that colour and tone varience is key. Its not very obvious from the pics but there are so many different colours in the armour of the Pagasus. From redish browns through ochres and creams to pure white. glazes of yellow, purple (complimentary colours create striking contrasts) blues, reds and greens. All in different spots that keep the large flat plates interesting.

It takes a hell of a long time to paint (i'd guess a couple of hundred layers of paint on some parts) but the results can be very rewarding.

I hope that answers your questions and if you want any other info check out the article section of Coolminiornot.com

WOW! Yer still cant believe that the TPM saw my sculpts as worthy of being in thier collections. Such an honour. I am really glad you liked it.

As for a wing/feather tutorial, its in the works. I'll post it ASAP, and it is by no means a definitve guide, just how I do them. I 'may' have the tutorial done by the weekend (this is in no way a promise or garentee :P)
