Blackjack - Spin by frozenpyro71 Blackjack - Spin by frozenpyro71
The main character from the fanfic Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons by Somber.

This project was loads of fun to do especially working on all the details and the base.

Made from Supersculpey and painted in acrylics.
Stands about 4 inches tall.

Why have I only just now seen this? I finished Fallout: Equestria about a month ago, and now I listen to Project Horizons while I felt. I love Black Jack as a character, maybe even more than little pip.

But wow, the detail and realism in this is insane. I've never seen a better representation of a pipbuck, and the dirt and rust just look so awesome and grungy! Amazing work!

My first reaction to this sculpt was cursing, because OMFG this looks amazing!
The details on her clothes, the base, the dirt on her legs... It's so awesome I can't think of any adequate words to describe how awesome it is.

Go Fish is best pony!
And this is a fantastic model. (coming from someone who does 40k... painting (and sculpting) little people is HARD)

The details in this one are so great. Love everything but I am really impressed by the amount of effort you (look like you) put into the base/environment. Really fantastic.

The base alone is epic........But your Black Jack sculpt has to be the definitive archetype of all the Black Jack sculpts! Nuff Said!

love the sense of motion in this, really does look like she's running. As for the rust and stuff, did you use pigment powders and all that good stuff on there?

You are correct my good sir. Most of the weathering and dirt effects were done with several colours of powder pigments.

Sir, that's a fine art!

I'm a huge fan of all the rust/dirt/similar effects, so to me this is really impressive! The style I love and use in some of my 40k figures, but this is done way better than that!

How did you get the paint on on white so flat? I mean, I know that you have to make many thin layers but is there anything else you suggest too? Especially in white and yellow I have had some problems.

The only "bad" thing I can say is that the eyes look quite large and especially from the left side of his face that doesn't look like it's shaped like the other (meaning that it doesn't look like it belongs to face, the other sits quite well).

The white areas were painted in a soild light grey colour (Astronomican grey from gamesworkshop) then highlighted with a few layers of a 50/50 mix of the gray and white. Then this was highighted with pure white. The shadows were glazed with a very dilute darker grey to build up the contrast.

Yer, the trick is to do it in lots of very thin layers, the thinner the better. Because the paint is slightly translucent a good solid basecoat also does wonders for an even finish.

I have to admit the eyes aren't the best bit on this piece. Sculpting that perfect pony face still illudes me.

Yep, I feel your pain.
The face, I have no idea how to place the mouth and nose area. Well, practice makes you better, right?
I'm off to sleep and hunt for paints now. I got to find good replace for Astronomican grey since they have the new paints now.
Even though almost any light grey base color (on Games Workshop's basis) will do.

Hey, any idea about thinning paint on airbrush? I'm sorry to bother you, I have bought airbrush ages ago but I don't seem to find right way to thin it...

For an airbrush you can just use water to thin down the paints. Make sure they are quite well thined out or it will clog the airbrush quickly and give an uneven finish. There is a lot of trial and error using airbrushes but they are really fun to use.

Think he does a lot of painting with his airbrush so that would be how he gets in so flat

Oh? Thanks for the info.
If that's the case, I ask one more question: How do you know when the paint is thin enough? The most of the time when I paint with airbrush ends up with me being upset about it being jammed by paint once again. Or then it is too wet.

dont use water to thin paints in a airbrush, it will work but seems to clog more often. most paints spray well if diluted 1 part paint to 1 part thinners. for acrylics use tamiya x20a thinners
